SOYS Annual Gathering

The annual gathering of the “Students OF the Year Scheme” was held on 31st January 2010 at the Student Activity Center of the school. The Principal Mr. George Tam and the newly appointed Assistant Principals were invited as the guests of the occasion. Mr. Tam expressed the wish that SOYS can play a more significant role in the development of the school, Hong Kong and China as a whole. The participants also extended their gratitude towards our Alumnus Philip Ching who started the scheme in 1986 which provided a very good platform to link up the students of different years. Through the scheme, the participants decided to play a more prominent role to link up the students of different years starting with building a closer relationship among the SOYS of different years as the first step of the action to be taken in the future. - Paul Yip (Assistant Principal)

News from Haiti

Fr. Stephen Chow would like to share this piece of news from Edmund Lo's sister on Feb 03:
"Today got an email from Edmund's novice master, Fr Erik, he mentioned that Edmund and Artur are healthy and in good spirits. They have been a good example to the Haitian Jesuit novices because of their energy and creativity in how they help with the relief effort. Apparently the site they are staying is pretty good, like a "Hilton" compared to other sites, as they have real tents that are mosquito proof where there is soft grass underneath. Thus, there is plenty of food and clean water."

Update from Edmund Lo, Haiti

Artur (co-novice from Canada) and I had relocated to another Jesuit community- the novitiate, to better aid the relief effort. Sleeping in tents because buildings are unsafe. Artur does things (LOTS of things) around the novitiate, including moving boxes of aids and doing inventory things, while I head out with a team of (mostly) American physicians, firefighters, medics and ex-marines everyday to help in areas where medical attention is needed...click here for more details

Wahyanite helping injured earthquake victims in Haiti

Edmund Lo, who left our school in F.2 in the 80s to emigrate to Canada, joined the English-speaking Canadian Province last year and is on his experiment as a Jesuit novice serving the poor in Haiti. He survived the earthquake and is working hard with the Sisters of Charity to take care of the injured Haitians under very harsh conditions.
He and his co-novice have decided to stay on instead of evacuating back to Canada. Great spirit! I am proud of them!! Salt and Light TV has videos of Edmund (Just click 15th and 18th Jan on the right hand column of the video screen.)

Golden Memory of Fr A.J. Deignan, S.J.

In the afternoon of 7 November 2009 there were around 200 people gathered at the Wah Yan Hong Kong Chapel and the School Hall to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Ordination of Fr. A.J. Deignan, S.J. 10 Jesuit priests co-celebrated the Mass with Fr Deignan.(Fr Baptista, Fr Hurley, Fr Zee, Fr Lo, Fr McIntyre, Fr Deignan, Fr Chow, Fr Coghlan, Fr Russell, Fr Kane and Fr Walling). The 3 persons doing the reading during Mass were Dr Vincent Tse, Mr Dominic Poon and Mr. Au Yeung Kwok Hei while Mr. Raymond Yu and Ms Eva Chau did the offerings. After Mass, a tea reception was held in the School Hall. Dr David Fang gave us a detail account of Fr.Deignan's life starting from the date of ordination till now. It really helped us to refresh our 'knowledge'of Fr.Deignan.There was a mixture of old and young Wahyanites in the crowd together with friends to congratulate?Fr. Deignan. The teenagers were mostly the present junior form students. Some of the older Wahyanites brought along their children who were also Fr.Deignan's fans. Messrs. Martin Kwan and Cecil Chung, Chairman of the Past Students Associations of Wah Yan Hong Kong and Kowloon?respectively, were on the stage to congratulate Fr Deignan and presented him with a souvenir. While enjoying this meaningful occasion, our hearts were warmed by the sweet and gentle smile of our most beloved Fr A.J. Deignan, S.J. (View Photo Album here)

Over 250 guests, alumni, teachers and students gathered yesterday evening to bid farewell to the two retiring Asst. Principal Mr. KC Kwok and Mr. WS Lo (WYHK'77) on 10th July 2009. With a warm and family atmosphere enjoyable through the evening, everyone has a chance to take photos with the two APs and wish them health and happiness after retirement. Both Asst. Principals sincerely thanked the opportunity to serve in Wah Yan and will continue serving in different capacities. They even, for their first time, sang a song "iOն" originally by our alumni Hacken Lee. Come back for more later. (-Simon Chan)

- Talking about seniority, I met with Mr. Vincent Lau who was in Class 8 in 1939. (Class 8 is equivalent to Primary 5 of today). Vincent had to quit school due to the War. If he had not quit, he would have been in the grad-class of 1943, as he recalled.

Chung Pan's operation a success

Mr. Norman So reports: Thanks to your support and prayers.? I just heard from Fr. Stephen Chow that Chung Pan underwent a very successful surgery this morning and the doctors were satisfied with the outcome.? We are given to understand that the tissues in his leg are functioning well and a total recovery (apart from the toes removed to minimize the probability of a relapse) is expected.? Let us keep praying for him and his mother, who is, I am certain, both relieved and exhausted after so many days of anxiety and busy shuttling between places.
