Update from Tin Shui Wai Project

Dear Alumni,

Since our establishment and because of your enthusiastic support and participation, we have provided service to 700 students from over 10 TSW secondary schools and have non-stop invited the remaining secondary schools in TSW to participate. Meanwhile, we decided to expand our service to other areas and we have picked the Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School which is one of the few schools in HK specializing in serving ethnic minority. 70% of its students are from Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Pakistan, India, Salvador, Fiji, etc. Some of them are refugees or new immigrants and many are locally born HK citizens. Since they still have to learn their own native language plus English and Chinese is difficult and needs time and practice to grasp, nearly all of them cannot pass the written Chinese DSE examination and many graduated with only lower primary level of written Chinese. As such, they generally are barred from higher education in HK and are engaged in low level jobs even if they have done well in other academic subjects, are promising and can speak fluent Cantonese after living here for years. Those refugees and new immigrants who cannot speak Cantonese are in an even worse situation. We have agreed to extend our English tutorial service to those new Chinese immigrants plus ethnic minority youths in Marden who need to brush up their English. We have also agreed to recruit and supply Marden with a Chinese tutor to help improve the Chinese/Cantonese competency of its under-privileged students.

I am therefore writing to you in the hope that you will agree with and support the introduction of this new service to ethnic minority youths and to check if you or any of your WY classmate is interested to teach beginner Chinese/Cantonese to Forms 1 to 2 ethnic minority students. Apart from a degree and some working experience in any discipline for sharing in the classroom, we have no special requirement for this post and appropriate training and teaching materials can be provided by the Chinese subject teacher at Marden, if needed. We can also offer the tutor a travelling allowance of $100 for each of his visit to Marden. We need his service for only ten weekday afternoons from late Sept./early Oct. and up to before Christmas 2017. If you like to take up this volunteer opportunity or have any alumni in mind who can help, please refer this message to him and ask him to contact me asap by email or phone/whatsapp at 67079653.

If you have any specific educational or social work idea which you believe our project or other Wahyanites can help to uphold our 'Men for and with Others' WY spirit, please do drop me a line for us to consider or recommend to Father Stephen Chow who may be able to enlist the help of other Wahyanites to follow up. Hope to hear from you or your classmates soon. Many thanks.

Meeting with other Jesuit Alumni

Fr. Stephen Chow has just attended the World Union of Jesuit Alumni Congress 2017 held at Cleveland, Ohio, The USA, in mid July 2017. He met many delegates from other Jesuit Alumni Associations across the world who are interested not only in broadening their networks with others but also to learn how other Alumni Associations bond their members and promote friendship with fellow Alumni Associations.

On 13 July 2017, Fr. Chow introduced us to Mr. Naresh Gupta, the secretary of WUJA (World Union of Jesuit Alumni), who paid a short visit to Wah Yan College, Kowloon. Mr. Gupta is very impressed with how WYHKPSA and WYKPSA are organizing their series of events for members every year and how the two WYPSAs collaborate and cooperate with each other. He would like to see our good tradition shared and extended to other Jesuit Alumni, in Asia as well as to other continents. He informed us that the next World Union of Jesuit Alumni Congress 2021 would be held at Barcelona, Spain, where the Jesuit originated and it would be a very meaningful reunion for all Alumni. He would like to see more people from Hong Kong attending the Barcelona Congress as well as joining the annual Council meetings, the next one would be held in 2018 somewhere in Asia. For more information on the recent congress, please visit the WUJA web site.

Mr. Gupta was joined by Ms. Irene Cheung, Principal of Colegio Mateus Ricci (利瑪竇中學) from Macau, another Jesuit school closest to us. She advised that her school has just formed their Alumni Association last year and humbly said she is looking upon us as a role model. She was accompanied by Mr. Samuel Tang, Chairman of Colegio Mateus Ricci Alumni Association, and Mr. Chan Chip Wa, Director of Macao Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association (澳門理工學院校友會理事).

Voice of Wah Yan 2017 Fundraising Pop-Singing Contest

Greetings from the Foundation!

Following the implementation of small class teaching (SCT) in the two Wah Yans since 2008/2009, our Schools have been progressing well in terms of academic performance and character formation. To name but a few, our DSE and other open examinations results are continuously improving (on par with other Grant Schools and able to yield a top scorer of 7 x 5**), whilst our School Choirs and Athletic Teams have been winning top trophies in many inter-school and even worldwide contests.

Essentially, SCT has been able to provide more attention to our young Wahyanites, leading to a closer teacher-student bonding and mutual trust, and hence a higher learning morale and brotherhood, not only in the classroom but everywhere on campus and even outside Schools. Most importantly, you can see an immense fighting spirit for self-improvements and excellence among our students and teachers alike.

The Foundation is committed to support SCT and whole person development programmes for the two Wah Yans until 2019/2020, dishing out around HK$10 million+ each year. Thereafter the Schools would like to extend such initiatives for 5 more years. In other words, we need around $60 million to sustain these programmes. We are working hard on the fundraising plan to achieve this target. And we are rolling out the first fundraising initiative now - Voice of Wah Yan 2017, a Pop-singing Contest:

Event: Voice of Wah Yan 2017 Fundraising Pop-Singing Contest
Date: Sunday, 15 January 2017
Time: 1000-1500hrs (Qualifying Round for upto 24 entries); 1900-2200hrs (Final: 8 finalists)
Venue: School Hall, Wah Yan College, Hong Kong, 281 Queen’s Road East, Hong Kong

Awards:
Champion - $20,000 gift coupon and a Zeppelin Wireless Amplifier by Bowers & Wilkins
Second - $10,000 gift coupon and a Zeppelin Wireless Amplifier by Bowers & Wilkins
Third - $5,000 gift coupon and a Zeppelin Wireless Amplifier by Bowers & Wilkins
Best Performing Group - 1 Zeppelin Wireless Amplifier by Bowers & Wilkins

Enrolment Deadline: 5 December 2016
Fee: $30,000 per team (as donation to support SCT at the two Wah Yans, hence tax-deductible)

Music is an integral part of education at Wah Yan, where many Wahyanites have been able to voice out their emotions and thoughts, in solitude or through jamming with fellow schoolmates. Let’s join hand to keep these fighting spirit and brotherhood going, for it will empower our boys to pursue new heights in their studies and personal development. Enclosed please find the poster, enrolment/donation form and award images for perusal and disseminations to your students, parents, teachers and staff members and alumni. Enrol/donate now, we want to gather all of you to support the Schools!

Please call me on 9092 9433 if you need further information. See you all at the Voice. Thank you very much again for your support.

Mentorship Program 2016

The annual Wah Yan College, Hong Kong (WYCHK) / Marymount Secondary School (MSS) Interview Workshop was successfully acomplished on 30 April 2016 at WYCHK.

The event was kicked-off by our honarable guest speakers, WYCHK Principal Dr Y.L. So, MSS Principal Mrs Julie Ma, MSSAA IPC Karen Ho and WYPSA Vice Chairman Dr. Thomas Tsang, followed by our group photo crowded by over 30 mentors and 50 students from both schools.

Before the actual interview started, we invited Mr Stephen Lo and Miss Annabel Chan, each alumni of the two schools, to conduct an interview skills presentation to all students. The mentors and mentees were then ushered to their respective classrooms, where mentors led self-introduction, one-one-one interview workshop and group discussion mimicking actual university interview and provided invaluably critical comments throughout the process. Different from last year, we added a second round of group discussion section with swapped mentors in order to widen the mentees exposure to mentors in other groups. The function was then ended with sharing section from both mentors and mentees after close to five hours of fruitful activities.

We want to show our greatest gratitude to all guests, mentors, teachers, helpers, etc . Your contributions brought significant benefits to our fellow students. We hope and believe the function will continue to support mentees not only on interview skills, but also for linkage among mentors and mentees.

WYPSA Finance Fraternity Dinner, 4 June 2015

The dinner was successfully held at the school hall of WYCHK with more than 120 finance professionals participated. It is also the second Finance Fraternity event with Wahyanites from both sides to come together, after the drinks organized by WYK brothers in May.

We are honored to have Fr. Deignan, Fr. Chow, school advisor Mr. George Tam, Principal YL So, Principal Warren Chung, and also many of our favorite teachers joining us, including Mr. WS Lo, Mr. KC Kwok, Mr. KS Fung, Mr. David Lui, Mr. Ip Fuk Wah, Mr. CS Wong, Mr. YT Wong and Mr. Ma Kam Lung. Many alumni were making most of the time catching up and taking selfie with the teachers before dinner began.

The first “Successful Alumni Series” was also successfully launched during the dinner. In each session, we would invite the senior alumni with remarkable experience in the finance industry, to come and share with us their inspiring stories and defining moments during their working and school life. And we hope the younger generation could be benefited from the words of wisdom while reflecting on their own career development. We are honored to have the two distinguished alumni, Mr. Francis Yuen (WYK 70’) and Mr. Christopher S. Chan (WYCHK 79’), who are both still actively serving the Wah Yan Community in various roles, kick started the first session for us.

Mr. Francis Yuen is undoubtedly a very successful banker and entrepreneur famous for his long time and senior experience in finance sector. Besides serving several senior roles in banks including HSBC Wadley and Citi, he served as the Chief Executive at Hong Kong Stock Exchange Limited at the age of 33. He later found Pacific Century Group and became Deputy Chairman of PCCW. He also serves on the board of directors of the University of Chicago and the Shanghai University.

Mr. Christopher S. Chan is currently Head of Reserve Allocation at Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Before this role, Chris has worked in JPMorgan Securities for over 18 years with his latest position as Head of Chief Investment Office (Asia Pacific). He is also the adjunct professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Both Francis and Chris have shared a lot of their invaluable experience with us during the interview conducted by our Convenors, Eddie Lau (WYCHK 97’) and Edmond Lau (WYCHK 99’), who have come across Francis and Chris outside of Wah Yan again at the University of Chicago Alumni and JPMorgan network.

Monty Fung, CEO of Wah Yan One Family Foundation, and Edward Lau (WYCHK 96’) had also come to the stage to give us the latest update on the WYOFF and solicit for the support from the Fraternity respectively. The dinner was ended with a high note with the lead pledging from Francis, Chris and the Fraternity Convenors to support the two Wah Yan Colleges to continue small class teaching, teacher formation and whole person development program.

You can find the event photos and interview videos at this link.

Third Intake of TSW Free English Tutorial Project - English Tutors and Volunteers Wanted

Dear Wahyanites,

I write to invite you and your family members to participate as volunteers to provide a free English tutorial service to the poor and needy teenagers in Tin Shui Wai (TSW), the so called City of Sadness in HK. This is the third phase of a noble project initiated by Class 1971 WYHK this year and is endorsed by Father Deignan, Father Stephen Chow and both Principals of WYK and HK. Their recommendations are at Attachments 1 to 4. The third phase will start in mid-Feb. 2016 and since we are expanding our project to cover even more needy students, we need even more volunteers to help.

According to Wikipedia, TSW “acquired a rather dubious reputation in Hong Kong for being an area where numerous serious family and social issues, including domestic violence, mental illness, and suicide occurs….. …….. Tin Shui Wai is prone to family tragedies because of its remote location, limited employment opportunities, and high density of public housing estates. Some would also argue that the large number of new immigrants from Mainland China in the area, struggling to adjust to the different cultural and social dynamics of Hong Kong, also contributes to the problem.” While the HK Government has committed to improve and provide more services to its residents, there is always a gap between supply and demand.

As WY graduates, we uphold the ‘Men For and With Others’ spirit to serve others and help the needy in society. Given the situation in TSW, we consider it worthwhile to provide a free English tutorial service there to help teenagers in Forms 2 to 4 whose parents are receiving public assistance and therefore cannot afford to send their kids to private tutorial classes even if they are promising but are academically behind standard because of lack of proper guidance and support at home. We do not aim to produce outstanding students, but help deserving teenagers in TSW to improve their grades, guide them to become responsible citizens and hopefully lead them to climb the social ladder like us. Our objectives are to give back to society what we have taken from it and spread the Jesuit spirit and WY education to the lowest self-esteem and most needy group of teenagers in HK.

Discussions with principals and social workers in TSW have confirmed that there is a strong demand for English tutorial service after school. We have, therefore, in our last two intakes this year recruited altogether 24 Wahyanites and their family members and friends as tutors to offer from April onward nearly 30 classes each of four to 10 students thus helping nearly 200 under-privileged students for a duration of eight to 10 weeks. More details of the Service and Mode of Operation are at Attachment 5.

Review at the end of the two phases showed that all participants considered them a big success and many of the students would like us to continue. Since some tutors are willing to stay on and some needs a break, we are now recruiting additional tutors who are willing to offer around 30 hours of their time from mid-Feb. to mid-June 2016 (hopefully two and a half tutorial hours a week for up to 10 weeks) to continue help run this free tutorial service. We also need substitute tutors to provide relief and supporting staff who can help us with minor duties periodically. All of them can either offer their service free or if they need, a travelling allowance of $100 can be claimed for each service visit of not less than 2 1/2 hours to TSW.

We prefer to make it an exclusive Wahyanite project, if possible, and therefore we would like to invite your participation before we consider opening these positions to outsiders. If you are interested, please let me know by return of the enrollment form at Attachment 6. A briefing session will be held at WYK (Common Room) and WYHK (Conference Room on G/F) at 3 pm on Sat. 23 and Sun. 24 Jan. 2016 respectively to answer your Qs. before you actually commit to serve. Current tutors will also be present to share with you their experience and English teaching skill training will be provided later for all tutors. We have positions to fit every Wahyanite and their family members, irrespective of their level of education and experience. Current WY students are also welcome to become supporting staff and gain credit for their service. Their parents can also join to offer their service and guide their son to gain some volunteer experience.

Don’t belittle yourself or the difference you can make to change the life and vision of these teenagers, many of whom have never seen the world outside TSW. With the holistic education you have received from WY plus your career and life experiences, you can certainly influence and make a positive impact upon them.

So, do come to the briefing and enroll as a volunteer. Ask your classmates and family members to come too. We welcome everyone who has a heart to serve the under-privileged and we are certain we can match you with a suitable position in this project and at a time convenient to you. Meantime, if you have any enquiry, please either email or Whatsapp/call (67079653) me. Many thanks.

PS — Q and A for Tutors_201508 is a Q&A for prospective tutors who want to know more of their role. All attachments referred in this invitation are contained in this link.

Students of the Year 2015-16

Dear fellow Wahyanites,

With the helps from Dr. So, Ricky Lai sir, some teachers, past S.O.Y.s., PPs & a few core council members, this year’s S.O.Y.s and Student Ambassador have been carefully & successfully selected. As usual, the 3 S.O.Y.s would act as emcees of the Reunion Dinner held right after the conclusion of Speech Day ceremonies and so students should have known who they are at that time. We only left the announcement of Student Ambassador to be at the dinner time. Let me share with you the names of these students below. Pls join me in congratulating them for their achievements. To me, this is not solely academic achievement. Other than showing us how well they have done at school, they need peer supports, participation in different curricular activities and last but not least, some awards as well.

They are 5Y Chan Ka Lun Galen 陳嘉綸, 5C Cheng Wing Jun, Alex 鄭永儁 & 5Y Guo Zi Xuan, Jerry 郭子軒 with Jerry being the Student Ambassador.

Special thanks to Mr. Ivan Hau for all his helps.

Final Call for Homecoming Concert

Dear Old Boys of Wah Yan,

Homecoming, what a heartwarming word! As it is the chosen theme of the forthcoming fundraising concert for the Wah Yan One Family Foundation, I would like to share with you some homecoming stories.

As you may know, I went home to Wah Yan for the 95th anniversary celebration last December. The functions of the international conference of alumni, the impressive new school complexes , the familiar classrooms , the joyous atmosphere of the gratitude dinner and meeting former colleagues as well as students I once taught became my cherished memories.

It is rewarding to find that Hacken Lee is coming home to support Wah Yan. Believe it or not, I can still recall quite vividly the short conversation I had with him at the farewell tea party for Upper Six students. He had decided to venture into the entertainment world instead of pursuing university studies. I cautioned him about the unpredictable chance of success in show business. Years later, events proved he made the right choice. I am happy for him and appreciate his homecoming to help his alma mater.

There is another homecoming, which, in Father Deignan’s own words, ‘is a blessing to Wah Yan’. Dr So Ying Lun, a former student and colleague of mine, had accepted the post of principalship, forgoing his opportunity to move up even higher in the tertiary education field. Dr So came home to Wah Yan to further the vision of Jesuit education which he believes has worked miracles in the lives of many, including his.

You might be one of those who experienced miracles. When you were at school, there were still quite a number of Jesuit fathers. Without your knowing, many of them were teaching and running extra-curricular activities on voluntary basis. The government did not pay them after they reached the mandatory retirement age of 60. They greatly relieved the workload of the lay teachers and reduced the teacher-student ratio. Their presence also meant more personal interactions between teachers and students, a significant factor in fostering values and building good character.

Now that there are no more Jesuit fathers teaching at Wah Yan, it is not easy to achieve the most important goal of Jesuit education, the whole person development. As the range of student abilities is bigger than before, small class teaching is needed to cater to such diversity. Much more manpower than what the present government funding allows is needed. I recently learned that Wah Yan, a grant school which used to receive more grant is now allotted more or less the same funding like other subsidized secondary schools with much smaller campus grounds. School maintenance is not funded according to campus size nor extra-curricular activities, according to magnitude. This has resulted in greater financial pressure on Wah Yan which has the second largest campus on Hong Kong Island and a much broader scope of student activities than an average aided school in Hong Kong.

To maintain the high standard of Jesuit education, Fr Deignan initiated the Wah Yan One Family Foundation (WYOFF). With the generous contributions of many alumni to WYOFF, the two Wah Yans have benefited from the extra funding. For WYHK, class sizes for English, Chinese and Math are reduced to between 12 and 24 in junior forms.

From the attached appeal letters by the school management, you can realize the need to contribute to WYOFF for its sustainability. I provide the above picture hoping to further emphasize the importance of WYOFF’s fundraising drive.

The present shortfall in reaching the fundraising target may be due to donor fatigue after the various fundraising campaigns all these years which is understandable. However, I hope you can take pride in knowing that your past contributions, whether it be for WYOFF for small class teaching and whole person development or for the School Development Project of WYHK for its two very functional complexes, have resulted in very concrete benefits for the younger generation of Wahyanites.

The Homecoming Concert is a befitting final program in the 95th anniversary celebration. If you are not in Hong Kong and won’t be attending this event, may I encourage you either to purchase tickets for friends or family, as I did, or make a donation. That way, while you cannot come home to Wah Yan physically, your moral and financial support is a heartwarming ‘homecoming’ to the dear school.

Take care. God bless.

Rest in Peace...

Let us pray Fr Lucas Chan (陳耀聲神父), a young Jesuit priest belonging to the Chinese Province, who passed away in the morning of 19/5/2015 in the United States after an acute collapse. Fr Lucas was a teacher in Wah Yan College Kowloon in the early 1990s, and entered the Society of Jesus later. Some WYCHK students knew him from his participation in the CLC annual retreat during his summer return visits to Hong Kong. May he rest in peace, and may God comfort his family members and fellow Jesuits.

Wah Yan Mentorship Program 2014-2015

Mar 27 2015: Career Fair

This year we hosted a successful and large scale Career Fair event. Being different from previous year’s events which were held on weekends, this year’s program was hosted on a Friday and we were pleased to have the entire Form 5 students participated in our event. With the support of Mr Ivan Hau and Miss Kate Wong, we conducted a thorough survey from all Form 5 Students in regards to their preference for various professional industries; and subsequently we selected the most popular 13 industries for our Career Fair. Apart from the relatively popular industries such as Banking/Finance, Accounting, Legal and Medical, we also invited old boys from industries such as Aviation, Entertainment, Architecture, Marketing/Advertising, Physiotherapy, Information Technology, Social Work, Civil Engineering and Entrepreneurship to join our event. We aimed to provide diversity across different industries so they could gain better understanding in different sectors. Therefore, on the day, each student was given the option to choose three respective industry speakers to listen to during the 3 hours event. On behalf of WYPSA and all participants, Wah Yan Mentorship Program would like to say Thank you once again to all the speakers for spending their precious time and thoughtful sharing on a Friday afternoon. We sincerely look forward to see you again next year.

May 9 2015: Interview Workshop with Marymount

The annual Student Interview Workshop, co-organized by WYPSA and Marymount Secondary School Alumnae Association (MSSAA), successfully took place on May 9, 2015 (Saturday). More than 150 form-5 students and alumni from both schools gathered on the Wah Yan campus for this interactive and fruitful workshop. The workshop began with inspiring opening speeches given by the principals from both schools, Mrs. Julie Ma (MSS) and Dr. Ying-lun So (WY). Coordinators from both alumni clubs then delivered a series of presentation and group demonstration to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge of succeeding in admission interviews. During the breakout session in the second half of the event, mentors were able to directly interact with the students and provided personal advice in a small-group atmosphere. The workshop ended with a constructive feedback session given by the mentors, and also an encouraging closing remark by Anna Lisa Lee, the representative from MSSAA. We are very grateful for all the generous support from the participated alumni and teachers, whose contribution was crucial to the success of the event. WYPSA will continue such meaningful joint effort and keep exploring ways to benefit the young Wahyanites.
