Wahyanites in Beijing

Eugene Tang: "In early May 2010, Fr. Deignan, Fr. Chow and a few alumni visited Beijing to participate in the First Annual Matteo-Ricci Symposium. It was at a gathering during this auspicious occasion that we decided the time was right to officially start our Beijing Chapter. With the growing importance of the Chinese economy, we see an increasing number of Wahyanites residing in Beijing. Hence, this Chapter serves to gather our fellow Wahyanites together and aims to build up a strong supportive network for students, alumni and family. In addition, we hope to act as a means for Wahyanites in Beijing to contribute to the growth and development of our schools. Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt invitation to all alumni living or moving to Beijing to join our local chapter and participate in our activities." Contact: Eugene Tang  William Ngauv

The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci

進念.二十面體及九龍華仁聖依納爵小堂合辦 七幕多媒體歌劇 《利瑪竇的記憶宮殿》 世界首演 : 5th-9th November 2010
In this seven-act opera, the story of Matteo Ricci’s endeavour to convert the Chinese people to Christianity through teaching them the art of memory will be told in a spatial collage of singing, sounds and images. With prodigious feats of memory that he metaphorically put as a boundless memory palace constructed in the mind, and his thorough knowledge on science, technology and culture of China and the West, Matteo Ricci created an amazing encounter between western and eastern civilizations, and planted the seeds of cultural exchange between them in the few hundred years thereafter. This opera is written by Diana Liao, playwright of Poet Li Bai, with music composed by Steve Hui Ngo-shan, and internationally renowned operatic bass singer Tian Hao Jiang as Matteo Ricci.

Wong Chin Wah 黃展華 (‘38), Maurice Lee 李梅生 (’60), Daniel So 蘇權國 (’ 74), Albert Poon 潘錦崙 (’92) & Michael Ng 吳林坤 (’10) sat down yesterday afternoon at WYHK to share their experience on taking the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination. The PSA would like to thank all 5 fellow wahyanites for taking the time to do this sharing. This news clip will run all day today at the CableTV News Channel (Ch.9). The 2nd Annual PSA Wine & Dine

The 2nd Annual PSA Wine & Dine (aka Dr. Chung KL Wine & Dine) was held on Monday July 26 at Ivan The Kozak in Central. This dinner started by Martin Kwan last year with PSA event coordinators to discuss the year plan. This year I extend the invitation to all PSA Interest Group convenors and in total 15 people attended. We discussed the direction of PSA for the coming year over scrumptious Russian cuisine as well as many bottles of wine.
After the dinner, about half of the people stayed behind for more discussion & drinking and thanks to Ivan the owner who gave us complimentary vodkas exclusively imported from Russia. Even after the restaurant closed, 6 of us stood on Hollywood Road talking till 2am. Dr. Chung enjoyed the vodkas so much he bought 2 bottles of chili vodka from the restaurant to take home.
I would like to thank Silas Chan for organizing such a wonderful dinner & thank all those who attended. In the coming future, Silas promised to organize more Wine & Dine party open to all with varieties of different cuisines. - Gary Ching (PSA Chairman)

Not Just Words

EnlargeWho says lawyers are all talk and no action ....as promised we did make our gathering and what a crowd we had. A bunch much merrier and cordial than the ones opposite the street last evening. Some 30 lawyers turned up for drinks from the age of 21 (young graduates) to 83 Mr. William W.S. Lo whom we believe to be the most senior practising Wah Yan lawyer now in Hong Kong while Mr. Partick Yu is of course the most senior Wah Yan lawyer of us all. 15 of us were able to resist the World Cup televising and stayed for dinner. Wedding Bells - Pauline and Armen Ho 何浩東 (1993)

Old boy Armen Ho (1993) tied the knots with Pauline on 12th June 2010. Many will remember Ho Tung as the Aron Kwok look alike in Wah Yan. He graduated as an Accountant but after a couple of years with the Big-Fours, he went to England and got himself a Law Degree. He is now a Financial Controller with a real estate fund specializing in PRC Education Charity projects. The wedding was a very jolly feast with much Wah Yan presence including his Pun U Class Mistress Ms. Cecilia Lau. Many will of course also recall Armen was an active Venture Scout and a Cub Scout Leader for Pun U Primary School for many years. View photos here - Toby Lo

Uniform Romance

Web Album Many of you may recall we have always held St. Joseph College as some kind of rival in one sense or another. Well that's also the case in Scouting. Our 15th HKG has for decades crossed swords with the 1st HKG (St. Joseph College HK) in numerous Scouting competitions. These battles have historically been affectionately known as FiFi events by the scouting community (First vs Fifteen).

Last week on 21st May 2010, we had another FiFi of a very different nature. Michael Sy our Scout Troop Leader (as well as one of the webmasters for the PSA) took 1st HKG Leader Jennifer as his bride and tied the knot of matrimony by a very special wedding held at the Tai Tam Scout Campsite. Everything including the Civil Celebrant was a Scout. Please click to see more. Our three cheers to Michael!

Contemplation Course for Busy People

Full DetailsDr. Stephan Rothlin S.J., Chairman of the Association for International Business Ethics, will direct a contemplation course at Xavier House, Cheung Chau, from 11th to 13th June (Friday to Sunday).
Contemplation offers busy people a simple way to get rid of nervous distractions, to reach inner calm and enjoy life more fully. It is actually an easy method of meditation focused on the perception of one's own breathing, body and one word, such as "Abba" "Jesus" or "Om" Contemplation is both rooted in the tradition of Zen and of the Christian Orthodox "Prayer of Jesus" which can be practised by atheists as well as by people with a religious background. This meditation does not require any previous qualifications. It is however necessary to have a certain psychological equilibrium in order to make progress in the exercise of Contemplation and being able to integrate Contemplation into one's daily life. Usually the practice of Contemplation inspires to try to understand insights from major Oriental and Western wisdom traditions and stories. The course is open to all religious denominations. It is optional to join the celebration of the mass and the Contemplative prayer of adoration. Click here for full details.

Farewell Games & Dinner for Ip Sir

"He has represented us in basketball, football, athletics, table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming.... A hard-working and reliable athlete.... He has instilled a strong sense of fair play in every game he played..... He deserves to be the Sportsman of the Year". Do these phrases sound familiar to you? Yes, you're right, those are the phases Ip Sir likes to use when describing our Sportsmen of the Year. Though we may not be able to read these phrases in our school year book next year as our Sports Master will be retiring after this school year, the liberal and free sporting environment Ip Sir and other teachers established will remain unchanged.

To bid our Sports Master's farewell, we staged an All Star Football and Basketball Games followed by a Farewell Dinner on May 15. As a rough estimation, over 120 old boys, many of the them Sportsmen of the Year, joined the party to reminisce the good old days we spent with Ip Sir in Wah Yan. It was full of fun every minute and Ip Sir showed us again his never declining football and basketball skills and fair judgment during the ball games.

Despite Ip Sir's retirement from his teaching life, we are pleased to know that he will keep contributing as a basketball referee and a basketball commissioner as well as devoting more time in voluntary work with Mrs. Ip for the needy in mainland China. We sincerely wish Ip Sir a healthy, happy and valuable retirement life.

To view the photos taken in the ball games and dinner, please click here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Mauchai2002/IpSirSFarewellParty#. 11th Wah Yan Football League - The glory stays in Kowloon

This season sees the Kowloon boys dominating the Premier League positions with the Hong Kong boys mastering the Elite posts. Galacticos 99 (WYHK99) and Dai Dui (WYHK88) managed to keep their enthusiasm in football and got the Elite Champion and 1st Runners Up respectively.
Favourite Nice Team, consisting mainly former Wah Yan Kowloon school team players got the 2nd Runners Up by beating AA, another team of WYK older boys, by 4-1. Youth United, a true Wahyanite union from WYHK and consisting graduates from 2001, 2002 and 2003 were shy in the finale after beating the last year Champion, Friends, and Nice Team in their last two matches. They lost 0-3 to Mofos (WYK96) whose players have proved that a small squad is enough to win the Championship when you have lots of concentration and determination. Yang Man Lung from Soccer Mania (WYK94) fetched the Top Scorer award by scoring 10 goals in the tournament. View photo album here.

Salute to Ip Sir - Our Sports Master will never leave us alone

Mr. Anthony Ip has decided to leave his teaching career after this school year to spend more time with his beloved wife and family. He would also extend his contributions for Hong Kong in basketball refereeing. He will be in charge of all the referees in basketball during the upcoming Asian Games in Guangzhou later this year. He will not forget his Wah Yan colleagues, students, fans, and friends and will be available when time permits. He spent the night watching the English FA Cup Final with some of us after a big sports party at Wah Yan and a farewell dinner for him.

Wah Yan Medical Fraternity Dinner: 10 April (Sat)

Dear Doctors and Fellow Graduates of Wan Yan,

Around May last year, some 40 medical doctors from our mother school shared a wonderful evening with fond memories at a dinner gathering. This year, we would like to invite you again to a dinner gathering on April 10 (Sat). The venue is the same as last year: 8/F, Chinese Club Building at 21-22 Connaught Road Central, Central District.

This is a great opportunity to meet old school friends, teachers, fathers, and medical colleagues. Also this year, we are inviting some special guests (wah yan graduates of course) who are very familiar in the medical profession.

The price of the meal should be around $300-500 per person. Fees will be collected during the dinner.

There is a limit to the number of persons in the venue (no wives, kids, sorry). Please register with us by replying to this designated email: saturnjupiterearth@gmail.com.

As there are wah yan doctors not on our email list, you are most welcome to bring them along as well, but please let us know through the above designated email in advance for better preparations.

Hope to see you then.

Regards,

Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai (Class 83, WYCHK)

SOYS Annual Gathering

The annual gathering of the “Students OF the Year Scheme” was held on 31st January 2010 at the Student Activity Center of the school. The Principal Mr. George Tam and the newly appointed Assistant Principals were invited as the guests of the occasion. Mr. Tam expressed the wish that SOYS can play a more significant role in the development of the school, Hong Kong and China as a whole. The participants also extended their gratitude towards our Alumnus Philip Ching who started the scheme in 1986 which provided a very good platform to link up the students of different years. Through the scheme, the participants decided to play a more prominent role to link up the students of different years starting with building a closer relationship among the SOYS of different years as the first step of the action to be taken in the future. - Paul Yip (Assistant Principal)

News from Haiti

Fr. Stephen Chow would like to share this piece of news from Edmund Lo's sister on Feb 03:
"Today got an email from Edmund's novice master, Fr Erik, he mentioned that Edmund and Artur are healthy and in good spirits. They have been a good example to the Haitian Jesuit novices because of their energy and creativity in how they help with the relief effort. Apparently the site they are staying is pretty good, like a "Hilton" compared to other sites, as they have real tents that are mosquito proof where there is soft grass underneath. Thus, there is plenty of food and clean water."

Update from Edmund Lo, Haiti

Artur (co-novice from Canada) and I had relocated to another Jesuit community- the novitiate, to better aid the relief effort. Sleeping in tents because buildings are unsafe. Artur does things (LOTS of things) around the novitiate, including moving boxes of aids and doing inventory things, while I head out with a team of (mostly) American physicians, firefighters, medics and ex-marines everyday to help in areas where medical attention is needed...click here for more details

Wahyanite helping injured earthquake victims in Haiti

Edmund Lo, who left our school in F.2 in the 80s to emigrate to Canada, joined the English-speaking Canadian Province last year and is on his experiment as a Jesuit novice serving the poor in Haiti. He survived the earthquake and is working hard with the Sisters of Charity to take care of the injured Haitians under very harsh conditions.
He and his co-novice have decided to stay on instead of evacuating back to Canada. Great spirit! I am proud of them!! Salt and Light TV has videos of Edmund (Just click 15th and 18th Jan on the right hand column of the video screen.)
The Canadian Jesuits are appealing for help, if you are thinking of helping, you might want to go to the Canadian Jesuit website - Fr. Stephen Chow
